VOLUNTEER

Volunteers play a critical role in helping SAFE meet the needs of the community. Learn how giving just a few hours of your time can help make a deep impact in someone else's life. We offer a variety of volunteer options to match different skills and interests.

Key Volunteer Roles

SAFE offers a wide variety of volunteer options. Some of our regular needs at both of our Choice Food Pantries include:

  • Client intake: Meet clients when they come into the pantry, confirm their demographic information and enter changes into our system. Ask the client questions on the intake form and, if needed, enter it into our database to help connect them with the resources they need. This position requires additional training from the SAFE staff. We also ask that people in this volunteer position commit to two weeks a month to help build relationships with out clients.

  • Sorters and stockers: Help to sort and stock food donations SAFE receives and restock the shelves at our pantries as needed. Volunteers in this role must be able to lift at least 20 pounds.

  • Shopping assistants: Help guests navigate the pantry and choose their food items.  Spanish skills are helpful, but not required.

  • Check out and baggers: Help clients check out from the pantry, including counting the items a client is "purchasing" to make sure they are not exceeding their limit, and assist in bagging the items.

  • Car loaders: Take carts full of groceries to the neighbor’s car in the parking lot and, if needed, help load the food into their car. Volunteers in this role should be able to lift at least 25 pounds.

  • Spanish interpreters: Assist in  facilitating communication with our Spanish speaking clients.

  • Truck unloading: Help in unloading the tractor trailers delivering food to our Choice Food Pantries and restocking shelves. Volunteers in this role should be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
